In 1912, Mongolia achieved independence from the Manchu Qing Empire. In 1913, Mongolia & Tibet recognized each other's independence in a treaty. But China invaded Mongolia & took control. There was a communist revolution, supported by USSR, in Mongolia in 1921 & Northern Mongolia (now Mongolia) seceded from China & became independent (albeit under Soviet domination). When USSR fell, Mongolia became truly independent in 1989 but Inner Mongolia is still occupied by China.
