Isn't that the "beauty" of being an American. We can do whatever makes us happy. Including, but not limited to, competing in a pageant.

From an article 6/16/1988 concerning this incident:

Michelle Anderson says she dieted, bleached her hair, took voice lessons and spent $5,000 in the 18 months that she plotted to disrupt the Miss California pageant and ''expose the lies they promote.''

Anderson represented Santa Cruz in the contest Monday night at San Diego. Just as the winner, Marlise Ricardos, was being announced, Anderson pulled from her bra a white banner reading ''Pageants Hurt All Women.''
