EDIT: Another go at uploading - the first one came out with no video

To Russ, Tony, Rob and Baron - thanks for the comments on the first attempt...hint...it should have uploaded on wedsnesday not Tuesday...

This is for my niece, UMA, who is FIVE YEARS OLD. We sang this together in the summer along with LOTS OF OTHER SONGS. Uma now owns her own UKULELE so I hope we can sing more songs together SOON.

Uma can definitely draw better than me.

Special prize if you can guess what day it is today....

Love from

Uncle James

It is an interesting song with interesting origins too. The Illy Alley Oh was probably originally the French Allez, Allez O! Shouted by sailors setting sail but the song became a children's playground chant in the 19th century in Northern England The Alley, Alley was the local name for the Manchester Ship Canal.

  • Hi James,

Great harmonies, I've never heard this song before. How did you do that and get the video up? I know how to get the audio like that, but the video is a totally different story. Great stuff.

  • Hi Marissa - great stuff in Crisfield - have been following the blog. Hope the banjo is a better fit! I'm using Final Cut express on a mac to do the video. Not sure how to do it on windows, but I think Windows Movie Maker has some of the same features. I'm only a beginner myself so I'm only finding my way with it!

  • cool, my kids at work love this song, as do I :)

  • Thanks very much!

  • Lucky Uma!

Great editing - especially the multiple James's's's - what the hell's the plural of James?

  • Cheers Tony!...I like the "hanging apostrophe" - no extra 'S". Oxford commas i can also live without
