Motocross is a family sport and the two young racers we followed were supported by enthusiastic parents, brothers and sisters and friends. These close knit groups travel between race tracks every weekend in season, driving campers, RVs, SUVs or pickup trucks with their bikes in tow. It's a fun weekend of recreational activity and partying for the everyone involved.
Every weekend at dirt bike tracks around the world motocross competitors of all sizes and ages gather to compete in the sport they love. Most are out for the thrills, but some young moto riders are looking to make a statement. We followed two rookies just stepping up to the expert class at the beginning of a long season of racing.
Winning won't be easy. A lot of guys who have won before are in their way.
The first race of the day was an Expert 30-plus affair, a chance for the veterans to get a feel for the track. Number 6, Keith Johnson, charged into the lead out of the hole and never looked back.
Roby Zahurak was watching, trying to learn from the veteran.
Johnson was first under the checkered flag, his closest competition nowhere to be seen.
One race ends and another begins moments later. There are five more motos to observe before the rookie's first heat.
There were 26 moto brackets that day and each had 2 motos. The best combined finishes determined the overall results.
Roby and Kody were both signed up for the 125 and 250 Expert races. The 125 class went off first.
Zahurak got off to a fast start, roaring out of the hole and into the lead.
He still held the lead after the first one mile lap, but there are five more laps to go and a lot of hungry riders on his tail.
Coming around the tight turns and over the bumps and jumps, Roby knew that big number 6 was on his tail.
By the 3rd lap is was the other way around, with Roby chasing the veteran.
One more time around the track and Zahurak had fallen well off the pace, joining Renzland in the middle of the pack.
Johnson took his second moto of the day, leaving the rookies in the dust and trying to learn from the experience.
Later that morning they lined up their bigger bikes for the first 250 Expert moto.
Johnson charged to the lead, coming wide around the first turn and trying to separate himself from the pack. This time it was Renzland who stepped up to challenge the top dog.
It only took one lap for the veteran to put the rest of the pack well behind him. Now the race was for second place, and Kody Renzland was fighting off all challengers.
Renzland had similar results in the 125 class, but showed more consistency on the bigger bike. A promising start, but it's a long season.
#6 should be making money
