Ben Skinner surfs The Cribbar wave in Newquay, Cornwall on 30/10/2011. Scores of spectators stood on the headland to watch locals surf the biggest wave in England, as a big swell and offshore winds combined to make for some good big wave conditions at the Cribbar. Wave faces were in the 20-30ft range (around 12-15ft if your measuring back of the wave height). Two tow-in surf teams tackled the Cribbar (also known as the widow maker). Ben Skinner and tow in partner Richard Sills scored lots of waves on the day. A stand up paddler (SUP) tried to paddle onto the wave - however didn't have much luck. I guess it shows the value of using jet skis on this wave. This video shows a couple of the waves Ben Skinner caught.

  • Is it viewable from land?? I do photography and would love to see the place myself

  • @LXUndertakerLX Yes it is viewable from the headland

  • There were plenty of wave faces in the 20-30ft out there - some sets were smaller for sure as you would expect. The national papers called it 50ft waves...which is err..a bit over the top :)

  • u could paddle in to that

  • @samkayak2 yeh, people have in the past. An SUP guy tried but couldn't get on the waves, then got caught inside and lost his paddle :)

  • North Fistral CAN be a lot heavier, and harder to surf than the Cribbar when its this size, Ive been out in it when it has been myself a few times.

  • Can't believe we went all the way to Hawaii and then missed bigger waves in our home county! Serve me right - and beer is not so good there either!!!

  • Gotta add this though, there are some of our fathers who surfed this in the seventies without tow in and jet ski rescue. They paved the way.

  • Yeeeeeehaaaaw!!! That is a beautiful lookin' wave!!! Even some of the Pros said they were shittin' themselves haha!!! I think whoever takes on the Cribbar is very brave!!

  • Love it! Saw the Skindog van and ski in Sainsbury's carpark today and wanted to give you a high five.... so should have. Nice one.
