Demonstration of the components and operation of a computer hard-drive. The drive has a transparent cover so the internal workings can be seen.

  • "as you can see, its too fast for you to see" hehehhe.

    cool tho. thanks for sharing

  • I hadn't noticed the "as you can see" comment before ... that is funny.

  • That arm must be incredibly light, strong and rigid to withstand the acceleration forces without deforming.

  • Strength isn't as much a concern as lightness and stiffness (i.e., the strength part is easy). But you're right ... the arm is designed to be as light and stiff as possible.

  • All hard drives should come with clear covers...

  • Agreed. All computers should have transparent cases also. :)

  • Utterly increadible, especially when you think that a HD that costs £30 can operate like this with outstanding accuracy for years on end.

  • That's a cool video. You realise how quickly the read / write head + arm is moving. I guess the tolerances are quite high in order for the hard drives read / write head + arm can move by using ground air effect ?

  • @arunarun4 Watching a recorded video isn't "real-time". ;-)

  • Geek porn right here.

  • @DrDaveBilliards as far as i know, you can get a clear case from somewhere like aria, dabs, or one of the known or not so known manufacturors and and i think i saw one of the known HDD manufacturors do a HDD with part of it see-thru...

  • Were would you find such a hard drive?

  • i do want a HDD with that transparent cover :D
