This video compresses a 45-minute drive into a 15-minute spin through the scenery of North Cheyenne Canon in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Gold Camp Road.

The first part of the video features Gold Camp Road. Gold Camp Road is now what was once The Short Line Railroad bed that stretched from Cripple Creek to Colorado Springs. Gold was brought down from the mining camp on The Short Line. The drive takes you through two railroad tunnels, multiple rock cuts and over old trestles with sheer drop offs into the canyon below. It winds for over 30 miles but due to tunnel cave ins along the route, you have to drive it in sections. This is the short section of the road that is accessible from town. You can drive all the way through to Cripple Creek if you begin on Old Stage Road (which criss-crossed the rail bed multiple times), and bypass the caved in tunnels.

The second half of the video takes place on the High Drive, an old carriage road from the 1800s.

  • I live in the Springs too but have never ever attempted this drive. Why? Cause shortly after moving here in '91, my hubby and I STUPIDLY attempted the drive to Victor/Cripple Creek from that OLD single lane road that begins east of Canon City and runs north to Victor. Have YOU attempted this drive? Just curious.......... Oh, we did it in a brand new White convertable. Huge pot holes, hairpin turns, no guardrails, on mostly a single lane (a narrow one at that). Luv it here though!

  • @cocatwoman7 Sounds like you did Shelf Road..I have a short video on that one too. It' a great drive!! :)

  • Thank you for your video, you continue to be my window to beautiful, colorful Colorado...I am still trying to locate from KC, to Cripple Creek...

  • You'll love it here! Glad you enjoy the videos!

  • Thanks for the video! Brings back memories. We drove the Gold Camp road under a full moon at night in the early 80's to Cripple Creek. We had to move a fallen tree on the exit of one of the tunnels, which was just before a small campground. We stayed at the Imperial Hotel, met Sandy who worked as the accountant and her husband Guido who worked at the Gold Mine, celebrated her birthday with several drinks, saw the play, and had a great breakfast the next morning. Had a wonderful time there!

  • Wow, sounds like a great time! I just drove this again Sunday and the aspens were beautiful. It's a really pretty drive!
