This is Part Two of a two-part video. For the other half, see the video that this is a response to or check my channel page!

***PLEASE READ INFORMATION WHILE YOU LISTEN! It's informative and fun and something to do when the slideshow pictures aren't that fun.

This song is the opera from FFVI (FFIII when it was first released on the SNES), performed for the first and I think only time in English. It translates roughly to "Air of Half Character" from Italian. It's number twelve on the album "More Friends Music From FINAL FANTASY ~Final Fantasy Orchestra Concert in Los Angeles 2005~" (yes, I know what a long name that is - it's actually the whole name, though), performed in the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles by the World Festival Symphony Orchestra, featuring Stephanie Woodling as Maria, Chad Berlinghieri as Draco, and Todd Robinson as Ralse.

I decided to add a slideshow with it because it's more fun to watch that way! The song is 12:27 long, so it's divided in half, but I cut it at a silent

section, so you're not missing anything. :D The lyrics used are mostly from the GameBoy Advanced Version, different from the original SNES version. I retyped them just by listening!

[Instrumental]

Draco:
Oh, Maria,
Oh, Maria.
Though I call you from afar
Will this message reach your heart?
Oh, how I long to be with you...

[Instrumental]

Maria:
Oh my hero,
My beloved,
Shall we still be made to part?
For promises of
Perinniel love
Yet sing here in my heart.

I'm the darkness,
You're the starlight
Shining brightly from afar.
Through arms of despair
I offer this prayer
To you, my evening star.

Must my final
Vows exchanged
Be with him and not with you?
Were you only here
To quiet my fear...
Oh, speak, guide me anew!

[Instrumental]

Draco:
Maria!

Maria:
Draco!
I knew you would return to me, my love!

Ralse:
Insolent rouge!
Knave the Western Hold!
You would address my queen-to-be, Maria?

Draco:
Never shall You have Maria's hand!
I would die Before that day comes!

Ralse:
Then we duel!

[Instrumental]

Ralse:
I yield, this day is yours, Draco!
Curse you should you let Maria go!

Draco:
Peace then, for you'll have my word:
With me she'll know nothing but peace!

Ralse: Maria!
Maria! I love you so!

Draco & Ralse:
Maria! Maria! Return to me!

[Short Instrumental]

Maria:
I am thankful,
My beloved,
For your tenderness and grace.
I see in your eyes,
So gentle and wise,
All doubts and fears erased.

Though the hours
Take no notice
Of what fate might have in store...

Draco & Maria:
...Our love come what may,
Will never age a day.
I'll wait forevermore!

I'll wait
Forevermore!

  • Goodness, I was listening to this (first time hearing this opera version btw), half-laughing the entire time out of sheer incredulity and the over-dramatic air of it, which is only to be expected from an opera, of course, but I just wasn't in the right mood (I mean, "Then we DUUUEEEL?" lol). And then Ralse sung, "Maria! Maria! I love you so," and the line right after with Ralse and Draco, and I was finally moved, clutching my chest and all. Overall, what a very, very beautiful piece of music!

  • sounds weird in english ... im so used to the ''boop booooop boooooop boooop''

  • @DarkKadan they have it on here, on youtube, also various orchestras and other performances.

  • @SageGeminiThe What? Nobuo Uematsu is a guy!

  • @Bandersnatch107 True enough. Classical opera is not all that big any more. They are around though and can be found easily enough if you try and look for them.

And also, the Black Mages do have a miniature performance of this "opera" (runs about exactly as long as this video and the one before it together) in which they actually bring in a well known Japanese opera singer to perform the part of Celes.

  • @42jemini I won't argue what went out of style when. Suffice it to say that classic opera is somewhat less popular than it was back in its heyday. I am aware that musicals are based on the opera style, as some of the earlier musicals (vis-a-vis GIlbert and Sullivan) were called "Operettas" ("little operas").

All I meant was, if classic opera, such as Uematsu emulated here, ever regains its mainstream popularity, I hope they produce one based on the FF VI opera. Or even if it doesn't. :)

  • I mean Dr. horrible, not Dr. malicious *face palm* Why do I always remember that wrong?

  • @Bandersnatch107 Technically, the opera style only went out about 10 years ago. Musicals are all based on the Opera style, there fore the Lion King and Mary Poppins would count as Opera in a sense.

And it is not that musicals are even completely out of style either, it is just that they have hidden them selves in the sea of the internet now. If you want to see a modern day musical, look up Dr. malicious' musical blog some time.

  • Now come and dare tell me video games aren't an Art form.

  • A chilling overture, an awesome aria, a classy waltz, an exciting climaz, and true love conquers all! If opera makes a comeback, I want to see this one.
