I have a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport. This video attempts to capture the engine noise that developed 6 months ago at the onset of winter. I stopped driving it soon after the noise started and stored the car in the garage. Now it is spring and I would like to fix the car. The engine is a 4.0l SOHC V6. It sounds like a timing chain rattle. I would appreciate any input from the experts regarding what could be the problem and the least expensive remedy.

Thank you.

  • How did this turn out, and where did you find the parts?

  • It didn't turn out at all. I traded the car in for a 2010 Kia Soul Sport through the CARS clunker program. Got $4500 for it.

I do miss the power of this car - compared to the Kia it's a rocket! It was also impressive as a 4x4. However I was looking at $1000 - $1500 in repairs.

The Kia is also much more fuel efficient at 26 mpg avg. EPA compared to 16 mpg avg. EPA for the Explorer. I would be saving about $800 a year in gas if it stays at $2.75 a gallon. If the price goes up I save even more.

  • I can tell you this much. You could put a ford through hell and back with little to no problems. Just remember this one thing: That Kia will not make it a day or 7 years! They are actually worse than Saturns and Chevy cavy'!

  • It's made it for 1 month now - so far so good. I have a 100,000 miles / 10 year warranty. If it does not last 7 years I should be covered. we'll see. Thanks for the warning.

  • Not too sure it sounds like a timing chain rattle, but you can drop the oil pan ( there is plenty of room, no need to remove any cross members on the frame), and see if there are any broken plastic pieces in there, i dropped mine a week ago, and found a bunch of broken plastic pieces, and tomorrow im going to be removing the timing cover, which will reveal the problem, watch my video if you think they sound alike!

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep and eye open for your video. I took the car to a shop that's worked on it before and they think it is the timing tensioners that needs to be replaced on the passenger side. I guess I'll have to open mine up also to see exactly where the noise is coming from.

  • Sister has a 2000 exp 5.0, almost at the 200k mark. A few things that went bad were pulleys, alternator, power steering pump, starter, ac compressor bearing failure (all these easily fixed)

A few suspension repairs (200k mile you expect this). Started making a lifter noise today. Thing is she had a 84 mustang and engine knock started and dad said when motor locked he would replace it. No oil hard driving and guess what??? Engine never seized. You know its a FORD when you can do that.

  • fuckin timimg chain

  • @Whitecrackertrash

Did you fail basic reading comprehension in elementary school? I simply stated the simplicity of the fix, than how the OHV v6 is far more superior than the SOHC.

  • @Eriic9104 excuse me , you say on your comment like 6 month ago they that the 4.0 ohv is the samething as 4.0 sohc I am here to tell you is not , the 4.0 ohv engine is a much better engine period.

  • @Whitecrackertrash

    I know.

The motor in this vid is a SOHC though.

  • @Eriic9104 the ohv 4.0 engine does not have this timing chain tensioner problem

  • i have a v8 5.0 omg it does so good in the snow

  • yeah this truck could have been saved if you just didnt run it and went and bought the two upper timing chain tensioners one for the right bank front very easy to get to 26mm bolt come right out 40 bucks and the one for the back left bank little harder to get to.. same thing on mine the tensioners went out on the front right bank made the timing chain slap around and make the same noise but before i ran the shit out of it and totally ruined the engine i did some researched .

  • Timing chain death sound is an easy fix provided you catch it early enough and have the proper tools. However, OHV 4.0L V6 > SOHC 4.0L V6
