This video was shown at the project launch event for OkConnect on December 9, 2010, in Oklahoma City. OkConnect is the name of the BTOP (Broadband Technology Opportunities Program) Public Computing Center grant award received by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries through the NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration).
High-speed broadband capabilities will increase library Internet connections to between 4.6 megabytes per second to 100 mbps at 44 rural Oklahoma public libraries as early as 2011. In addition, the grant will provide 326 videoconferencing capable laptops and desktop computers, as well as 36 room-based videoconferencing systems around the state.
The project is made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed by Congress in 2009. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is providing matching funds and in kind services to implement the improvements in Oklahoma.
