i'm trying to figure out if my empire builder had an f40 or a genesis. i was a kid when i road amtrak to oregon. it was around June 1997 or June 1998. funny how i can remember the 3 airlines I took to oregon but all I can recall is that I took one small train and one big superliner train. i am assuming it was the empire builder since we stopped in Chicago to switch trains and that is when i noticed the size difference.

Why does Amtrak use so many Locos on short trains like this? Are they underpowered or is it just for acceleration?
-
@400exNick they still use them
-
Oh that's right was it because they didn't have cab signals? I know some lines require all leading units to have them, like the CSX A line where I usually railfan. Only thing that stinks about that is you almost never see classic power up front.

@400exNick Keep in mind the F40s could not operate in certain areas of the Amtrak system.

Great Dopplar!!!! 5 Stars!

I love the GE P42DC better than the F40PH
-
@HighIronofWisconsin those are Amtrak material handling cars which they stopped usage of in 2004 when the Amtrak mail contract expired
-
@400exNick that wasn't a pepsi can
the P32BHW was called the pepsi can because of the way the paint scheme made it look like there was a P on the equipment access doors

@400exNick The F40PH was that big O.O
I really miss the F40's. They make that pepsi can look tiny!!
