The carrier aircraft at the center of Virgin Galactic's plans for commercial space flight, the mothership known so far as White KnightTwo, was unveiled by Virgin's Sir Richard Branson and Burt Rutan on Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Scaled Composites' factory in Mojave, California.

  • amazing

  • i dont see whats galactic about this! people dont understand.

  • Very different concept for an aircraft.

BTW Burt Rutan will be speaking in Newport Beach CA on May 7th 2010 to help the Women's Cancer Foundation.

  • Actually there have been a lot more ships/vessels bearing the Enterprise name then you'd think:

    2 Continental Navy (1775 - 1777)

    6 U.S. Navy (1799-Present)

    1 U.S. Navy building (it's actually a recruit barracks/ship design for training)

1 Balloon, 1Space Shuttle, a training ship at the Mass Maritime Academy, in addition to the 11 Enterprise ships from various Star Trek movies/episodes and unlicensed films.

    Search Wikipedia for USS Enterprise.

FYI there have also been 15 HMS Enterprise's.

  • substitute SS 2 with a rocket carrying a satellite & I could see definate possibilities for commercial White Knight 2 sales independent of the space tourism industry.

  • A pleasure - glad you enjoyed the info. You also mentioned the Vari Vegan - which I'd not heard of - was that a design of his for non-meat eaters? j/k ;) I watched the SR-71 jet model video you'd favorited - that was pretty cool!

  • wow that varivegan like most of Burt's designs was ahead if its time...thanks for sharing !

  • Then there is the Pond Racer (I shot that at Reno), Starship (shot that air-to-air), Catbird, and very unusual Boomerang. The Long EZ and Vari Ez were wonderful designs but I think you already knew that. Oh, the VariViggen looked like a little F-15 Eagle too. Enjoy the research! :)

  • honestly no...ill google them

  • He has one of the most interesting, creative and ingenious minds ever to design an aircraft. I shot the rollout of the Ares and Proteus - ever heard of them?
