Sgt. Charles G. Richardson fought in combat in the Vietnam War during 1967 - 1968. He was severely injured by a grenade, received the Purple Heart, and tells his story. Many Vietnam veterans have a story to tell. Most have not had a proper "welcome home" in recognition and thanks for their service to, and sacrifice for, our country.

  • Here is a description of the actual medal:

"The Purple Heart Medal is a 1 3/8 inch wide Purple heart bordered with Gold. Within the Purple heart is a profile of General George Washington. Above the heart and between sprays of Green leaves is a replica of the Washington Coat of Arms (a White shield with two Red bars and three Red stars at the top). A raised Bronze heart with "FOR MILITARY MERIT" engraved below the coat of arms and leaves is on the reverse side."

  • Here is a recent explanation by the Defense Department:

"The Purple Heart recognizes those individuals wounded to a degree that requires treatment by a medical officer in action with the enemy or as the result of enemy action where the intended effect of a specific enemy action is to kill or injure the service member".
