Communion Hymn - "Shall We Gather at the River"
camcorded live 15 March 2009, 3rd Sunday in Lent

1) Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God.

Refrain: Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river, gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God.

2) On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, we will walk and worship ever, all the happy golden day. (Refrain)

3) As we reach the shining river, lay we every burden down; grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown. (Refrain)

4) Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. (Refrain)

Tune: "Hanson Place"
Text: Robert Lowry, 1864

Wayne Burcham-Gulotta,
Music Director/Organist

J. W. Steere & Son Organ Co., Opus 701, 1918, 3/49

Ernest M. Skinner bought out Steere in 1920 and Skinner ran Steere as a separate company for about a year. Then they brought it into the fold as a separate Skinner factory. For a time organs being built there had the Skinner name but were essentially Steere organs. Much of the great Skinner at Woolsey Hall, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA is Steere (1915 major enlargement of 1902 Hutchings). Final expansion to the Skinner instrument at Yale we know today was the 1928-1929 rebuild.

  • @xXMeteorShowerXx

So sorry to hear of the passing of your Grandmother.

I'm happy the hymn was here for you.

    God bless,

    Wayne

  • Praise God! I love the old hymn's. I'm 33 yrs old and I love the Lord.

I'm a Nazarene and our church has gone to all contemporary style of worship. I often leave church not feeling that I've even been there. I've tried various other churches in our community and this style of praise and worship has seemed to have taken over the traditional style. It's so sad! Thanks for putting this on you tube. I loved it! God Bless you all.

  • @kellmichkamkar Thanks for viewing and your kind comments.

  • Great classic 19th century American hymn.

  • Beautiful! Sad that I've never heard this wonderful hymn sung in a church in England.

  • I can't say that I do, but my dear old Dad that just recently passed was a big western fan, and if it had anything to do with horses, gunplay, cowboy's, especially a bigger than life 'Western Star' like John Wayne... Well then most likely I've seen it, I'm gonna have to check. The scene I was speaking of in 'Hang em High' is my Mother's alltime favorite Western scene. I can't recall the title "Searchers" but I bet my Mother would get a kick out of seeing it, "THANK'S"! It's true about sound qal

  • @Lalijoker Hello yes i remember that I wonder if you saw John Wayne's 'The Searchers' ,the song is being sung at his familys funeral. It seemed to have been sung in alot of early westerns.

  • I don't know if you ever seen the Clint Eastwood movie, "Hang em' High". But when they were giving the condemned criminals their last words the townspeople were singing this hymn in the background. It's a beautiful song sung in this fashion and one of my favorite movies. I liked the poor guy's speach about how the whiskey got into his gut's and caused him to kill his wife, and that he had no excuse because he was raised by good Christian, God fearing parents. He warned all to not do as he did...

  • @xXMeteorShowerXx You are blessed that you had a Christian Grandma! RIP. You will meet again!

  • @kevinm46 Yes, it has played an important part in the American musical tradition. The melody was set by quite a few American composers: Ives, Copland, and others.

  • @kellmichkamkar: im also 33. we just left our Methodist Church which is going contemporary in every way...found a solid Indepentent Baptist Church to attend....they're out there if you look hard enough for them :)
