Nick's POV
I watch Frankie's bedroom disappear and step back into my grave circle.
"It works," I say, surprised.
"Told you!" Anna giggles, and then goes back to playing with a flower. Anna has a deep passion for flowers. She is endlessly twirling, braiding, plucking, and smelling them. I smile at her childish ways. Once a dead child, always a dead child.
Even though I don't ask, Anna starts explaining the previous events. She speaks without looking at me, "It happened for me, but with dance. I loved to dance; I was good at it too, still am. When I died I had only been taking lessons for a few months, since I turned three. I was ahead of the class because Robin had been teaching me for a year." Anna stands up and starts twirling, dancing, ballet. Her dance is beautiful, and I know she learned in heaven, probably by some of the best ballet dancers of all time.
"Robin kept dancing until she went into sixth grade. By then I was already in heaven, and the power didn't work anymore. Up until I went into heaven, every time Robin danced, I was with her. I don't know if I made her better or worst, she was a better dancer and all. I like to think that I gave her confidence, but I'm sure I just distracted her. Either way, I enjoyed it, and she always was happier, less focused, but happier still, when we danced together.
It works just like I told you, you feel the hum of the thing you love, dance for me, music for you. Then you step out of your grave circle, it you feel pain then the power of love isn't strong enough. If you don't feel pain, then travel to the source of the music. The person playing the music will not see you; only hear a hum in their ear. You can see them, and you can guide them. You can't do everything for them, but you can shove them in the right direction.'
"Once they stop playing music, you come back here. Once you are here, you have thirty seconds to get back into your grave circle before the pain starts again."
I nod my head and let thoughts tumble around of what I could do with this new knowledge. I could teach Frankie, he could be a star. I could be freed of the boredom I get when Anna disappears into heaven.
I now know two ways of tricking the grave circle. Them forgetting to say Amen, and them playing music. I wonder if there are other ways to trick my grave circle. I ask Anna.
"There are many loop holes to the grave circle, but I will tell you one more. Your grave circle is exactly fifty feet from where your remains come to rest. If you were hit in a car, and your body burned to a point where more of you came to rest in that place then in your grave, then that is where you rest." Her voice gets increasingly angry, until she is yelling at God.
"That's what happened to your Mom." I state.
"How did you know?" Anna defends herself, her breath is hard, it slows.
"Joe," I say, remember how he told me in prayer.
"Yes, that's what happened," she sighs.
Something dawns on me, a light sparks and grows and grows, within seconds its the sun inside of me. I have to know.
"Anna, what are we?"
"Wingless angles."
"That's like a ghost."
"Yes, I suppose."
"We're souls?"
"No. We are the memory of who we were. The mind lives on, lets us do what we need to do in the after life. The mind may be considered the soul, but it's not. It's more then just a soul. We think, we breath, we feel pain, mental and physical."
"So, we must have nerves."
"The pain is all in your head."
"If our mind is up here, then our body is still down there." I state, not needing to ask the question.
