Tests and experiments on using a compact fluorescent lamp as a driver for flyback transformer.
The original is on INSTUCTABLES.COM by biotele, but this adds more information
Especially for the UK energy saving lamps

  • i think you need to use the old type,

the newwer types do not give that much output :(

i tryed it with a older version and a newer one.

  • The newer ones will work it is just that some need a capacitor in the line . That was the point of the video : to show the next stage from what other people had shown could be done with the old ones

The new Flybacks give out the same HV as the old ones

  • i know you need a cap in the line :)

    olderones (here ) work better.

    but still i get only 1 to 2 cm arc's :(

  • Try different values of Cap ( I think? that going smaller improved spark length)

Also get the Biggest value ( watts) CFL you can

    - It is still not as good as driving the flyback with a separate driver and increasing the CURRENT

  • i made a separate driver for my flyback :)

i think i am going to let those cfl thingies alone and focus on my flyback's driver more :)

  • You get more power if you drive from a separate driver

Even with a 12 volt 6 amp battery you get big fat sparks

The simple one transistor circuit works well and is robust

  • @zezimashock - look up neon store in you phone book or signs and buy a neon sign transformer for 30$ and you dont need to build anything, and never heats up and you can draw 3 inch sparks starting at 1 ich, mine is 12kv, at it is meant for pulling arcs on and you can run it over night and will be stone cold in the morning

  • @lilletizz

Glad you liked it and got it to work

You could now make a Jacobs ladder and then go on to Automobile Ignition coils which will take more amps - see my TESLA COIL ALSO

  • i got a video showing my working place around my flyback and stuff if your intressed you could take a look :)

  • about a year ago I didn't know what a flyback was , wich I wish I did because the people next to me wear throwing out about 20 old tv's/monitors
