I was baffled by this and it wasn't in the insect handbook by Michael Chinery. Big jaws, but what does it munch? Why does its arse look like a cat's face? I soon got an answer at the www.nmh.ac.uk Bug Forum.
Apparently it's a primitive weevil, Platyrhinus resinosus.

  • Hi,

This is a species of Anthribidae, related to the true weevils.

    This might be Platyrhinus resinosus.

  • Have you found out what sort of Weevil it is yet, let us know when you do please. Very nice find, thanks for sharing.

  • This looks really interesting. It's head is reminicent of the Tiger beetles and with those jaws and eyes it's definitely a hunter. The best place to get an ID is the Natural History Museums Bug Forum. It has never let me down yet.

  • My fist instinct was one of the weevil type beetles but as to species no idea
