Good luck shooting STS-128 on 8/25/09..
If you set the focus to infinity & manually adjust the white_balance it will eliminate that large halo and you can even zoom in without an even bigger halo. Defaults are crap for shuttle night launches. I was so pissed that launch when I had bright blob in the screen so I practiced shooting the full moon and those same settings seem to work good because its a completely dark frame with a very bright distant object like the shuttle.
