How many of you have worked a large wreck for days or weeks at a time? How many of you have walked an outbound with a packing iron and an oil can? How many of you have jacked cars in the mud? Do that for a while and see if your opinions change a little. Everyone needs to grow up and quit being "super carmen".Contractors or not, we all have a common goal. You can't hate on the contractors, blame the railroads for that. No sense in fighting amongst yourselves...

I love how every other carknocker on here has a different opinion on how to do things...contractor or railroad, every individual car dept on every railroad system does the job a little different...frame keys or shoe bars or where to place the portec or the chains..who cares? Let's just get the job done and do it safe...please tell me every carman on here drops roller bearing adapters and inspects them every time...yeah right...every one of you has cut corners sometime in your career....

Wish we made $32-$38 an hour...Tell me sir, what is it you do for a living that makes you so much smarter than us carmen? You must not be too bright to say something like "screw the dog".....You don't have a clue what carmen have to deal with on a daily basis...Oh and by the way, I have a college degree and you know what???? There ain't no FUCKIN JOBS out there that pay what I make now working for the railroad, even with my degree. But I guess i'm just a dumb lazy carman...oh well.....

@Carknocker07 LOL most of the time it could be a flat spot (a shelling that is not checked) of it could be a cracked wheel but it is always defects that cause a wheel to be removed.
-
@Carknocker07 The unions have been bankrupting this country getting "special benefits" form the government. Safety and child labor laws where not originally thought up by unions. Safety has gone up without government regulation. It has been a PROVEN fact. California cannot finish the god damn west side bay bridge any sooner and most components that "union" workers are working on come from china. So much for their protectionist plans.
-
@geomodelrailroader In passenger service yes, but I work on freight cars which are the vast majority of rolling stock and what is in the video. The AAR stats on B/O wheel defects may show shelled tread as a leader, but I would be willing to argue that shelled is not the leading cause for wheel set renewal. At least not in our shop and we change out hundreds of wheels a month.
-
@tehatemachine Really? How so? 40 hr work weeks, vacation, child labor laws, over time rates.... the list goes on for things the "evil unions" did for everyone. You're welcome.
-
@Carknocker07 some cars have disk brakes and they are welded to the hub but most wheel changes happen because of shelled wheels
Um frame keys are much faster and i know it is a busy yard how do u change articulated wheels a intermodal car wheel change out is fast ive changed lots of em from draw bars to flat cars so dude i know.

@kleintools123 Yeah frame keys on articulated cars. The main reason for the axle chain on this car is to stop the truck from hanging heavy on the side the wheel isn't being changed on. Just works better that way.

No need for a frame key to keep the good wheel in place. Or as you clowns use a shoe bar. Instead, take a double hook 6 ft. chain and wrap it around the axle and attatch the hooks to both sides of the center sill. Next, TTX is expecting people changing wheels on their equipment to inspect that 6x11 adapter you have bungied up to the side frame. Little hard to inspect it from their. Please tell me you are not a Progess Rail SCAB!

@chicagobrcvp Hey dude there is an axle chain on the outside wheel. Obviously you don't know what you're talking about or you would have seen it. Knock me about the frame key if you want to get picky, but there isn't any weight on the bar, and it's only there in case there is a problem with the axle chain, so it's not even needed.
This is a busy intermodal yard and whine all you want because there isn't much time. You would probably get fired from your job in the real world.
