No you don't. They are always in a hurry. Thats Chinese culture. When I worked there I rode the subway all over. Line 1 (red line I think) seemed to be the busiest. I lived near line 2 which was a little better. Surprisingly, some do offer a little consideration if you're a "foreigner" by indicating, "after you".
