This beautifully preserved recording features the original Broadway cast of Edward Albee's brilliant "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" performing the play from start to finish. It's quite rare, from what I have been informed, and was never re-released on any other form of media device outside vinyl.

The cast features Tony Award winners Arthur Hill as George; the legendary Uta Hagen as Martha; George Grizzard as Nick; and a young Melinda Dillon as Honey.

The original production was directed by Alan Schneider; it received its first performance on October 13th, 1962 at the Billy Rose Theatre in New York City. Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder served as Producers.

This monologue is delivered by Martha at the beginning of Act III, titled "The Exorcism". Brilliant. Enjoy!

  • Please post the scene with Martha and Nick, and Martha recites her "George and Martha; sad, sad, sad" monologue -- if you have it!

  • @AtLastOnTheGround - I have the entire play on vinyl... but only had access to a cam recorder for one day. In the future, I'll try and upload more, if not the whole thing. :)

  • @aidensfilms

Holy heck! How did you get this?!

  • @AtLastOnTheGround - no joke... $15 at a used book store here in Seattle. I told the clerk they were crazy for marking it down so cheap, but smiled and gladly paid. the discs are in mint condition, but the box is a bit ratty. It also came with a cool booklet with a bunch of side notes and pictures.

  • @aidensfilms could you post the entire play please I would love to just sit back and listen to it. Please consider it?

  • @TheGreatZurEnRaah

as I said to atlastontheground, I only posted these scenes when I had access to a camera. If that happens again, I'll gladly try and get the whole thing. :)

  • This is so chilling. Thank you!

  • So helpful, thanks op.

  • Yikes! Was thinking about how a modern Martha might interpret that monologue, and found a review of a 1996 Boston prod., *set* in 1996: "lines cut... updated or rewritten. The opening sequence, where Martha... tries to remember what Warner Brothers movie the tag line 'What a dump!' comes from, has been changed to a reference to Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, the stars of [the] movie version...throwing the audience out of the play and into confusion."

    I'll bet! Is nothing sacred?!

  • Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this! Always loved the "Clink!" monologue and what a treat to get to hear the original Martha, from back in the days when people *really* drank! Thank you again!
