Back when this was on NES there were a couple of tricks where by holding down the right D pad of the second controller you could jump really high. The other trick was that if you fell down a hole, you could release and repress the second controller right D pad you'd be immortal (as long as you avoided energy refills). You'd hear the death sound, and the music would stop. You'd have to use your alternate weapons (magnet, or search snake) if you wanted to kill the various enemies.

you can also use the magnet missiles ro kill metal man easier. just a tip. but you probably know that already
