First, I present the idea that creativity can occur in any domain (not just the arts). This idea comes from the reading "Creativity Across Cultures" by Todd Lubart from the first week of class. My first video force fits an scene from the Steven Spielberg 1977 film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with a stop-motion animation of a pile of staples.

The text in the first video comes from Close Encounters. It talks about one of the film's character's obsession with building a mountain, an idea that he happened to get from an alien encounter. This obsession is like the obsession that artists have when they are sculpting, painting, animating, drawing, etc. a work of art. Artists can relate to this scene because of the driving force (or inspiration, or muse) that takes hold of the character (Roy) that will not rest until Roy has created something he feels has expressed his idea and he has "figured it out" .

The images in the video, on the other hand, come from one of my own obsessions at work. I work in an office, and every day I process paperwork and remove a lot of staples. Inspiration struck me as I saw the staples on my desk begin to pile up just as Roy piles up his mashed potato/dirt/wire mountain. I force fit the staple pile on my desk with Roy's mountain idea, and tried to express the idea that creativity can strike you anywhere and at anytime, for example, while eating dinner, during an alien encounter, while shaving, while doing office work, or during your commute home from work: anytime and anywhere.
