For years I thought this was about Margaret Thatcher ("She said for the good of us all") and the striking miners - looking, listening, hoping things are changing for the better - a large and silent crowd were walking - said they had every right to be there...I first heard this song when was 16, now I'm 32 and I think all these years I was wrong - and that actually it's about homelessness... Any thoughts?
The single that never was. I think the story goes that 'One Better Day' was going to be a single. Then it was changed to this, hence this remix. At the last minute, Stiff went back to the original choice. Hence why the sleeve is the way it is etc. etc. Although 'One Better Day' is a better record, this would of charted higher I believe. Maybe it should of been a 'Double A'?. Oh well... :)
@andrewjw01 Backing vocals was David Wakeling of the English Beat andrewjw01. Your memory was good. This is one of Madness' greatest tracks. Wish Wakeling had done more with them after the English Beat broke up. This song proves his vocals would have lifted Madness to another level.
There are people that know Madness just for 2 or 3 songs and even for one song!!! Does anyone know the Beatles for 2 songs??? Madness has some many wonderful songs and so many underrated and undiscovered ones like this track and many others. They have a song for many situations: for party and for loneliness, introspection and romanticism. Viva Madness!!

WOW i'd completely forgotten about this track, which (to me) was probably one of two decent tracks from their Keep Moving album.
i can't remember who did the backing vocals!! i think it might've been The Beat?
