@CommanderMethos yeah, I know about the steel. There are a few unknown laws of physics that could still make it happen. subsidiarity stationed anti gravity pods sequenced along the line. That would enhance the safety as well, in case of line ruptures. We just had an asteroid sling shot around the earth last week. but actually the filament itself might even have enough mass if extended into space to hold itself taut. a tethered escape filament about 75 thousand miles long supporting 2 lifters.

We used to laugh at the concept of a 'sky hook'. All of a sudden it's a valid proposal for getting into space? The idea of reeling in a satellite is intriguing, but I see a little problem with that too....

from a historical point of view Americas gonna use what money it has competing with china (communism) and will only build one if another country starts building one first.

@paulhallart08 first youd have to capture the astroid in such a way it put in geo staionary orbit. then you would have to find a material with a high enough tensile strength to get that far. because steel aint gonna cut it my friend. currently they are pinning all their hopes on carbon nano tubing

@ThePresD Greenspan was put in charge of the fed, Supreme Court put Mr. Bush jr in power, Supreme Court arbitrarily allows corporations to spend unlimited money on any politician they want. the prediction with this scenario is for the rest of the world to recognize that if they don't want economic annihilation next time from US white collar criminals in a climate of business anarchy, they will have to nuke America. Doesn't look to promising for a U.S. space elevator. Let's hope4the best tho.

I came up with this idea in the 10th grade back in the '60's along with trinary ("transistic") computer language. funny, I thought no one was listening. I was going to use a steel cable that was held aloft by it's own orbit. they still could do it with that 2012 near-Earth asteroid.
