@LouisLambert Nope. It was released in America during Nintendo's reign in the 80's with their NES, but I don;t think very many consumers ever heard of it or had no interest in the unit. Master System didn't sell a whole lot, though because of this.
If I can recall, I had a similar misconception that the Master System was the Game Gear in Japan. Until I saw images on the internet. :/

I didn't know about the Master System; I thought that was just the European name for the Genesis!

@LouisLambert Ever heard of the old Master System? It was SEGA's first 8-bit console, before Genesis. Sonic 1 and possibly its sequals were also on that platform, but they just resemble the Game Gear versions, since it's also 8-bit. Basically, the Game Gear was a re-released Master System in handheld form, and quite the battery glutton!! lol
