the great wall actually worked. The nomads were seldom able to break into the great wall if China had not internal problems. All the major defeats happened when China herself was in the internal turmoil. The strong fortification only could be broken from the Chinese side.

@Rocketeer1001 militarily and economically is by virtue of its own strength from within and not by the help of other nations and peoples - this in itself is a great testament of awesomeness of this country. No country in history has been around 5000 years without crumbling or taken over by another country. The US in its own right rose quickly, but if it weren't for the Chinese, the Europeans, it would not be where it is today.

The strength of the US today is the collective work of people from every background, race, etc. The US early on opened their doors to many countries like China who at the time had no choice but to flee China during and after the cultural revolution - most of whom were the intellectuals of the day.
