Rep. Judy Chu, D-CA32, addressed the House on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 on H.R. 4564, the Emergency Jobs Program and Assistance for Families Act. This bill, which is co-sponsored by Rep. Chu, would extend a successful job creation program that has already generated 156,000 new jobs in 29 states, including 11,000 in Los Angeles County alone. Through the program, the federal government subsidizes 80% of the salary of workers, who are then hired through local government, private business or non-profits. Examples of some of the positions generated through the Jobs NOW program include park rangers, receptionists, teachers' assistants, dental assistant trainees, customer service clerks and child care workers. Workers are paid $10 an hour and work 40 hours a week. The existing program would end in September, but H.R. 4564 would extend and expand the program.
