Descartes en su momento también criticó las nociones espirituales de Pascal. En sus "Pensamientos" sección VI. Los Filósofos, frag. 353, Pascal abrazó el precipicio, se asomó al vacío, dijo que la grandeza sólo se alcanza por la totalidad de los espacios: "We do not display greatness by going to one other extreme, but in touching both at once, and filling all the intervening space." En pleno siglo XX al teatro de Samuel Becket se le etiquetó como "teatro del absurdo". Se le motejó así porque, mutatis mutandis, la modernidad vio en su obra "Esperando a Godot" lo mismo que Descartes vio en la metafísica de Pascal. La obra "Esperando a Godot" trata de dos hombres (Vladimir y Estragón) que no saben vivir ante la vastedad. Se sientan, se levantan, y mientras, esperan a Godot. Llegan incluso a pensar en ahorcarse por la angustia pero postergan ello. ¿Y quién es Godot?, ¿un salvador?, ¿una ilusión?, ¿un hombre clave para ellos, para la ciudad?, ¿es Dios?
