@Flozell2000 one other thing. Anna originally wanted $1 million dollars. Curtis talked her down to $600,000. But that 1 million is what Marvin is referencing at 2:21.

@WMBunch1983, good question. Marvin's attorney, Curtis Shaw came up with the idea.He got Anna to agree to $600,000. Marvin was getting about $295,000 or so per album as an advance per album from Motown (owned by her brother, who, ironically). Curtis wrote it up so Anna got the first $305,000 of the proceeds from the album. Anna agreed, Marvin signed off and the judge entered the order. I don't know how much the album made. But of course the work is priceless.

@srl1225 I thought he only had to give her HALF, though? Please fill me in, if you don't mind the story's not too clear.

This album was written and produced as a divorce settlement. The agreement was Anna was to get the proceeds from his next(untitled and not yet in production) album. His initial thought was to put together a rush job on a mediocre product. His second thought was NO!, my fans deserve better than a half hearted effort. While Anna was not pleased with the content of the album, she was more than satisfied with the sales.

"Do youuuuu remember all of the BULLSHIT BABAY! OHHHHHHHHHHH YEEAAAAAAH!" God damn. He gives me chills when that part hits.

"If you really love me..with all of your heart. You'll neva take a million dollars to part!" MAAANEE WHAAAT!!
This entire album is about his divorce from Anna Gordy Gaye. He threw this together because he had to give the proceeds to her. Listen to this album. Vey underrated, his best work in my opinion.

My uncle exposed me to "What's Going On?" when I was 17. Pure Eargasm! Then from then on I gradually enjoyed all of his masterpieces. "Here my Dear" did not appeal to me at a young age due to my lack of understanding . The material expressed was beyond my years. However, 25 and now finally understand the context while going through a similar ordeal.
