John Zerzan discusses the implications of modernity, including dehumanization, alienation, desolation, isolation, standardization, extermination of indigenous cultures, impoverishment of society, mass homicide, and growth of meaninglessness in society.

This is part of a talk John Zerzan held on his visit to Finland in June 2007.

  • ah, forfeiting before you have been checkmated. pathetic...

  • If all primitivists went into the woods to become living-on-the-land hermits or hunter-gatherers, how exactly are they going to spread their message? It will be business as usual for the rest of the world, and industry will continue to pollute the earth and extract its resources.

  • I oppose money but have to use it. I oppose technology but own a computer. I oppose capitalism but I have to work in it this way or another. I oppose authoritarian left or established organizations but with so much population I see the need for organized movements. I oppose nuclear family but was born in it. The list goes on. What is all that idea about primitivists having to be hermits? Zerzan opposes language but uses it to spread the idea. What's the point of bashing primitivists on it?

  • Hoist upon our own petard "" obvious bro

  • @vaahti Does it need to be brought down? What aspects are most deadly? I believe it is the Monetary system that is the cancer and that is what needs to be brought down. There are alternate methods of exchange, trade and barter in my opinion the current system is the problem. I like to think of it as a paradigm shift from Quantitative which is objective to a Qualitative or subjective system. But I don't believe that the lines dividing these ideals aren't necessarily hard, fast and permanent..

  • I think the acellerated growth and cotinued expansion is something related to evolution itself. There are people who think that we will be surpassed and will continue to merge ourself with technology and machines, but it will not be very nice if we take this path with a individualistic/egocentrist culture and economic paradigm we have now. So I invite people to see exaclty the opposite opinions of John Zerzan with the movies Zeitgeist Addendum and Zeitgeist Moving Forward found here on youtube.

  • @fsufan850 out*

  • I don't see what is any less human about the internet or technology than the 'primitive' lifestyle he is advocating. If you say I think grieving over the internet is worse than possibly grieving in person...maybe I would agree with you, but his association of what is human and not human is flat is wrong.

  • How is sending a condelense message via email so much different than sending a condolense letter by mail? People used to do that all the time in centuries past, when lower levels of technolgy made travel more difficult.

  • the analysis is good ; but the problem is that at the point our civilization has reached it is too late to go back , unless you are ready to pay the price : hundreds millions victims.Every moment of our lives exist with technology and we have grown so numerous thanks to technology .With it as it is now we will die and without it we will die.It is our fate. The only solution is to eliminate everything that is luxury : cars, televisions, mobile phones ..and so on but not ALL technology !!

  • @jortylbro as far as i know, they want to transform the system through reasoning rather than distance and escape themselves from it. They want to destroy this system that inevitably affects all life on earth

  • I appreciate indian culture the most of all. I think it's the highest kind of human life.
