Sheryl Crow - "Detours" - title cut from her most recent album. This was recorded in the studio.

The lyrics to this song are actually incredibly sad:

Mother, can you hold me together
It's so dark and I'm losing my way
... took all of these detours to find love
But when I did, it just faded away

Now what do I do
With this sweet love of mine
Do I give it away and
Hope someday I'll find
Someone half as awake
As the moon and the stars
Mother, teach me to love
With a paper-thin heart

Ma, ma, ma, ma ...

Mother, your words are so soothing
You speak of love and of light and of peace
But I've made it my course to avoid you
Just to hide from these feelings of grief

Now what do I do
With this sweet love of mine
Do I give it away and
Hope someday I'll find
Someone half as awake
As the moon and the stars
Mother, teach me to love
With a paper-thin heart

What do I do
With the sweet love of mine
Do I give it away and
Hope someday I'll find
Someone half as awake
As the moon and the stars
Mother, teach me to love
With a paper-thin heart

Ma, ma, ma, ma...

Mother, I know you were with me
You were there when I took my first breath
I can't stop looking back for the answers
I just keep coming up with regret
There are some things I just can't forget

  • song to her mother? whoa

did her mother pass away or something? this song is intense.... very

  • @rickdangerwood, Her mom was alive when this was written and I believe she still is.

Agreed that the lyrics are very intense... it's like she's a little girl asking for comfort from her mother about the tough things that have happened in her love life as an adult. For many of us, when we feel most vulnerable and want consoling, we turn to our moms.

On Sheryl's CD of this song (and in concert) you hear the plink-plink of a Jack-in-the-box... just like when you were a little kid. Very powerful.

  • I don't think she's wearing any make-up in this performance.

To me, she is absolutely one of the most beautiful women in the world. Check out this video: watch?v=BBbhXvvrzm4

  • Mother teached me to love with a paper thin heart.

  • Amazing, I love your music Sheryl :)

  • I could have written this song. My mom passed in 1984 and I still miss her. There are still times I would like to ask for her sage advice. I can truly relate to this song. And I certainly understand the "Paper Thin Heart."

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG AND SINGER!

  • My mother passed away when I was in 7th grade, and 20years old now, finding out about this song, I can actually feel better to move on with a paper thin heart. Love you sheryl, great song.

  • this song is beautiful. got me crying.

  • @MoreSherylCrow all so very true . this song reminds me of my mama , passed in 2006 the hardest thing I have ever done . never want to feel grief like that again . it scares me ....

  • Is that great video available on DVD?

  • Wonderful!

Is that video available on DVD anywhere?

  • I really liked Tuesday Night Music Club and Sheryl's second official album. But as time passed by I went to listen to other artists and forgot about Sheryl. Until now. I just discovered Detours and must confess that this song almost brings tears to my eyes. Go Sheryl!
