  • A numbers matching car and you're going to destroy that? Oh nnnnoooo!

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 Well I just just purchased the car and made this video with only minimal research on the parts. Actually I blame it on my lack of knowledge and the ebay seller I purchased it from. I was told that the engine and tranny were all original and with the provided engine stamps and pictures I had no reason to think otherwise. I released that my baby is actually sporting a 68' straight six and a turbo 350 tranny (should have been a powerglide). I'm still happy though!

  • hay how much did you pay for it?

  • @ian67camaro ...top end of the engine to be torn down and rebuilt, as well as doubling the cost with *two* cylinder heads to deck, instead of just one. If you want to someday turbocharge the engine, you don't want to deck the head though as with a turbocharger, this will lead to detonation that will blow holes right through the pistons. So read, read, read and read more and then think, think, think and come up with a good plan with parts that compliment each other and you'll be happy. :)

  • @ian67camaro - That's a pretty decent engine and out of all the inline 6 cylinders Chevy made, is one of the biggest ones. It's very easy to increase the compression ratio on inline 6 cylinder engines too, because all you have to do is remove 1 cylinder head, take it to a machine shop and they can deck the head, which means to remove some of the metal from the head, thereby increasing the compression ratio/more power. With a V-8, this is much harder to do and basically requires the entire...

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 I've got the 250ci model. I've been reading and it seems there are a variety of parts available and it may be quite simple and cost effective to get a decent HP increase out of this. My level of excitement is quite high as I continue to read about the potential.

  • @ian67camaro ...which will improve handling and not make the car so nose heavy. What is the cubic inch displacement of that inline 6 cylinder? There were two inline 6 cylinder engines Chevy offered back then.

  • @ian67camaro ...side that opens up to deliver more fuel when you stick your foot in it. :) They even have four barrel, aluminum intake manifolds for that engine. If I recall correctly, Offenhauser offers them. Headers can also be had from Hooker headers, or other companies. The first generation Camaro is a light car and with a well thought out turbocharged inline 6 cylinder, the car could be a big surprise. :) Another benefit the inline 6 cylinder will have over the V-8 is in less weight...

  • @ian67camaro ...lid over and putting the wing-nut back on. This allows much more air to get into the engine and more air = more power. :) Might help the fuel economy a bit too. The only trade off is there will be more noise from the increased volume of air going down into the engine. Holley even has a two stage, two barrel carburetor you can get for it and it works just like a four barrel carburetor, with a primary side that the engine uses when just toodling around and then a secondary....

  • @ian67camaro - Another benefit of the inline 6 cylinder is that there is plenty of room under the hood to work on it...like adding a turbocharger. :) Everything with the 6 cylinder will be less costly to modify. I've seen read of these engines being modified and providing good power. However, I've never heard of one being turbocharged before. Iskenderian Racing Cams makes several different camshafts for that engine. One of the free modifications you can make is by flipping the air cleaner...

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 I have considered keeping the straight 6 on many occasions. The 6 would be more unique and since my car was originally a 6 it would keep it as original. I wouldn't want my choice to keep the 6 to be based entirely on my current finances. I suppose if I could make some after market modifications for performance, it would cost less and be even more unique. I think I will look into this more. Thank You.

  • @ian67camaro - As a suggestion, with the ever escalating price of gasoline, it might be a good idea to lave that straight 6 cylinder engine in the engine bay. :) The V-8 into a Camaro thing has already been done millions of times. The Chevrolet straight 6 cylinder engine is a very good engine, tough, reliable, good fuel economy and with some power modifications can really provide good performance. Another benefit is that modifying that engine will be much less costly than a V-8. :)

  • @randywyatt2000 - The Chevrolet 400 cubic inch small black engine was never offered in a high performance version because of the overheating issues it would have with the siamesed cylinder heads.

  • Haha.. I appreciate the offer but I plan to be buried in it. =)

  • Would you be willing to sell it?

  • I would definitely keep the TH350, they can be built to handle about 650ft-lbs of torque.

  • nice camaro ian. i'm a really big fan of the 67 camaros, there my favorite year in camaros. i'm trying to look for a 67 rs project camaro. i really enjoy watching your how to's on your camaro, you should post more vids. and have you done any work on your camaro? because it been like a year since you post a 67 camaro vid. enjoy restoring her i know i would. post more vids

  • I should actually... Not much done body wise. New Carpet, steering wheel, suspension, door components. I have an original floor shifter for it too but am still looking for a good price on the console. When I get back home and have some time I will start working on her again and get some more videos up. Thanks for the comment!

  • canb you make another video of it since its been a year since your last one. love to see what youve done.

  • Thanks for the comment! Turns out I made myself out to be a liar. The seller said he 'thought' it was numbers matching. After some research it's a 1968 Inline6 and the transmission is a TH350. I am happy about the transmission because the powerglide would have been lame, but the engine is a disappointment; Going to have to switch it... someday.

  • Nice Camaro. If that motor is numbers matching I would keep it. Looks like a clean car. Hope to own one in the future. Good luck!

  • Naw unfortunatly the column shift was pretty much standard with the I6. Mostly beacause if a person was cheap enough to opt for the I6 they wouldn't splurge for the console. Besides, I have already purchased a floor shifter and plan to do a video on how to install it =)

  • you should leave the column shifter. I think that might be rare

  • All the time =D

  • Hey thanks for posting... I6 for the win!
