pt 2
I think initially the reason for the tinting was that the surface of mars in true clour looked like it could have been filmed in any Earth desert (as Carl Sagan said, he expected to see a grizzled old prospector emerge from behind a rock) So they tinted them red so it would look more convincing to the Joe public, Most scientists agree that the type of atmosphere is irrelevant: oxygen, co2 or methane, whatever, the sky will be filtered blue and that dust can't account for all the red skies

I read a few years ago about this guy who's dad worked for JPL in the 70's working on the Viking programme....he stated that he was there at jpl while they were waiting for the very first ever pictures to come in from the surface of mars and what they got was a reddish brown landscape with a blue sky. While they were scratching their heads, JPL and NASA reps came out of the (boss's) office who demanded that they put these red filters on the photos. no explanation was forthcoming

@mshafer1021 lmao, since the 1960's? On television and in movies maybe (and your dreams).

Don't you love all the conspiracy theorists who pop up on videos like this? As if space is just some easily conquerable frontier, like the wild west. People just can't believe that scientists do this kinda stuff for the betterment of humanity. Sure, I wouldn't be surprised if a discovery was hidden by the government. But I doubt the scientists would just sit idly by. Someone would slip.
Awesome video. I love this kinda stuff. Thanks for sharing.

From "Science Report" on Alternative 3, I did some conversons and found them accurate: 707.7millibars=20.88 IN barometric pressure=9880ft elevation on earth, about the height of Mount Charleston, Nevada which is Mars sea level. 4 degrees celsius=39.1 degrees fahrenheit. Sky looks right also, a light blue color showing a lower oxygen in the atmosphere. If real or not the video was accurate on real conditions on Mars. Then these pictures slip thru NASA and confirm the first probe was May 22 1962.

I've looked at these objects in higher resolutions and they appear to be ground formations from possibly geysers. The branches are appearing to be gullies. Now think about a tree on earth, with foliage, viewed from above, you don't see branches, only foliage. Unless it was a huge deciduous tree that lost its leaves each winter. Go to Mars Rover Blog and read and absorb the information. A lot is very technical, some is easy to understand.
Have fun. K.
Also, a blue sky on Mars is like the red sky on Earth at night, right?

Red Sky on Earth At Night?
Explain more.
I have seen red light in the sky at night, it was an aurora, there was also green. I have also been in dust storms, mostly red, sometimes, very thick and black.

Here's some superfluous information I saw the other day, but it was relating to landing instruments on Venus and identifying minerals. The haematite or iron oxide that is responsible for the red colour of Mars and the soils of the Earth, if heated above several huindred degrees is black. Venusian and Mercurian soils will be black, Would they change colour if brought back to Earth?

addendum to preceeding comment:
The truth of what exists outside of earth is extremely fascinating! It is so much so that they don't even show you real pictures of the various planets. Not one viewer here can point me to a real image of Saturn that is not photoshopped or painted.
Are you going to get to know this stuff, however? the answer is no. Its not that you cant handle the truth, its just that they dont feel you deserve to know. You are not elite enough, or priveleged enough.

Hi mshafer1021,
The Blue Sky On Mars sequence of images is just an example of a really, really, nice period of calm weather on Mars. Most of the time there are winds, and there is a lot of extremely fine dust, that once whipped up to high altitudes, remains suspended for ages.
The colour of the light also affects how the images come out. Same thing happens to our own eyes, does anyone pay attention?, Look at a white plate in the light of the setting sun. What colour is it?

Fact: Mars IS a habitable planet with an oxygen atmosphere, surface water, and life. All of the foregoing are not as abundant as they are on earth, but if one were to visit there today, they would need about 24 hours acclimation to the atmosphere, and you could walk around with no spacesuit, oxygen bottle or anything.
How do I know? Because archaeologists, geologists, seismologists, and paleantologists have been visiting regularly since the 1960s! Quite fascinating!

Well, I said my perceptions above, if the sky on Mars is dusty and red the pics will look a bit, "sunset-ish" red. and if the sky has cleared, light and colours we are used to are what the cameras see and return. But the dusty red days are more common. Telescope spectrometers can see what the atmosphere is composed of. Get a $10 one of ebay, play with it, learn how easy it is to see what elements exist from their light alone. Why just looking at Mars reveals its atmosphere.
