how far can you actually go with those things?

@paalbananas depends on the tier. diamond ones can push you pretty far, but for some reason the distance evens out for tiers 4-6, so if you use tier 4 it will go about the same distance as diamond. This is not intended, it's a limitation of minecraft's velocity system.

is there anyway to keep from taking falling damage when it launches you in the air?

I've been trying to make a quick-travel thing in a town, but it's being very unstable for me.  Seems like velocity is at fault. It can sometimes overshoot me like nuts, farther than it should be possible, but other times it makes me fall flat on my face. Can't make it land in that precise spot i want it to anymore. Dunno who to shake my fist angrily at, Notch or you :P

Love these new runes. Though it's far more fun to stick your direction-redstone torch on top of a block next to the rune. Sends you soaring upwards through the air... More like a ballistic trajectory than anything. Hah

Careful to land in water though. ;)
