The first big hit for the Mahotella Queens from 1964 - a love song about a girl called Thoko. The Queens here are constituted by: Nunu Maseko, Hilda Tloubatla, Ethel Mngomezulu, Windy Sibeko and Thoko Mdlalose.

Also included is a short clip of the Makgona Tsohle Band performing "Soweto Bump" from their TV series 'Mathaka', in 1983.

  • Hi Nick, plz add more of this music that is in Pedi/Sotho/Tswana - I knw the same groups have a lot of songs in these languages. Will very much appreciate. Thnx.

  • @mosakaso2010 Hi mosakazo. Thanks for your kind comments! As I haven't uploaded any music to YouTube for a while, I'll try to focus on uploading some Queens material in those languages soon.

  • Please Nick you can spare just one old bit of music, Thoko No 7.....Tom

  • @MrTommybull Hello again. I'm always on the hunt for this kind of music in whatever format - shellac, vinyl, cassette, CD... and so on. Unfortunately, I haven't come across "Thoko No. 7" yet. The only versions that I have are "Thoko" (this original version, originally released in 1964) and a follow-up recording called "Bala Thoko" (released in 1965). If I do manage to track down "No. 7", I'll let you know ASAP!

  • @NickLotay, Love old xool songs. You are part of a group of people that is making sure that music like this never die. Can you upload the song that kicks in at the tail end of the 1st song. 2ndly, I used to dance to a song that we called "Goloza". Dont know of the singa but may have been produced between 1969 and 70

  • @bengejack

Thank you for your kind words. The song you hear at the end of this video is called "Soweto Bump". It is available to buy on the CD "Mathaka Vol. 2" by Makgona Tsohle Band. You'll be able to find it on the sites Oneworld.co.za and Kalahari.net.

  • I was in Rhodesia in 1964 when Thoko was called Thoko No7 I would give anything for that tune as it would bring back so many happy memories of my younger vdays.

  • Brilliant! That is some really great footage of the Makgona Tsohle Band. Quite rare indeed. I have never knew there was footage of this great band. Thanks for posting.

  • I have such difficulty finding Mahotella Queens and similar music recordings, here in Oregon... Many many thanks, all wonderful things! Suddenly, I found myself dancing about! I'm sure that many people have this response... Fun to think of us all, dancing together, separately.

  • God Bless them, Also Mahlathini who rest in peace
