@tlgrimmy Not much... I am careful not to pull a lot of sediment into the filter. I will then drop the intake into clean RO water and continue to pump into the keg until it is full or it starts to look too watered down. The key here is CLEAN water I like RO water so it doesn't have any chlorine in it. I get some of the filters from the same place I got my RO water filter at waterfiltersonline ... good luck

I "back flow" the filters to help clean them out by removing them spraying them off then flush them the opposite way. hmmm it would be nice to use the pump for that. Anyway... I just hold them under the faucet and try to force water down the inside and plug the bottom and top the best I can to create a back flow. When I put them back in the system I flush them with clean water and still more stuff comes out once it is clear I drop the intake hose in to a bleach solution more stuff will come out.

@tlgrimmy I would suggest using the pre-filter to catch some of the sludge... I think it would really help keep the second one from plugging. Actually what I called a 30 micron pre filter is a 5 Micron?? Poly Spun Sediment Pre Filter... Pentek PD-1-934. The second one varies from a 5 micron Activated carbon filter to a 1 micron filter like the NCP-10 or C-8.

@jonkamm I forgot that I wanted to ask how much beer you loosed running it through two filters. I do smaller batches, so I'm trying to gauge how much extra I should ferment.

@jonkamm Thanks for the heads up. I actually got lucky on ebay and managed to get a little beer filter with a reusable 1 micron filter, hosing, etc. for $35! I picked up a little flotec cyclone 1/12hp pump for $30 on ebay as well. I figured that whole beer filter thing must be a gimic. I guess I'll still need a larger filter (like your 30 micron) to pre-filter it though, right? Or do you think I can get away with just using the 1 micron filter?

@tlgrimmy I use standard water filters you can get at home depot. specific beer filter? that is total BS. I don't remember what I had in it... probably $100 with the pump. I tried to go cheap on the pump and that was a mistake! I have had this one for 5+ years.

Very cool! Do you use reusable filters? If so, can you get away with the regular water filtering ones? I'm reading that you have to buy beer specific filters, but I'm not sure if that's just a gimmic to get money. I really want to make one like this. How much did the whole deal cost? Thanks for posting a vid about it.
What was the over al cost? From what I see, guessing it would be some where around $130.00 - Flotec pump is costly.
Not much less then homebrew purchased commercial filter??

@VoodooIrons It isn't exactly cheap and you are correct, the pump and the filter housing are the most expensive parts. The only problem with most homebrew filters I have seen is they are VERY VERY slow... we are talking about taking 30 minutes to filter your beer. With this filter I can finish 5 gallons in a couple minutes. I modeled this filter after a Brew on Premise filter system (of course theirs was really fancy).
