Courage

It is written, "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." Everyday our men and women in uniform show their love for our country by risking their lives in combat. In fact, it is a point of honor, that they will not abandon their wounded comrades on the battlefield. Their courage under fire, protecting the wounded and risking their lives pulling them to safety reveals the strength of the American character.

In contrast, when our military men and women come home from distant battlefields, families with special needs children, who are transferred to states like Florida and Texas are abandoned. Their children with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and related developmental disabilities are placed on waiting list for help. For example, in Texas 100,000 are waiting and in Florida 21,000 have been waiting since 2003. They are a the end of the line and there is no end in sight.

Because these military families have no help, many with special needs children must take hardship transferred to other states. Other military families are forced to decline oversee deployments because they must stay home to support their special needs family, thereby ending their military careers.

In America, people with a developmental disability are our society's wounded and they are abandoned on the battlefield of life. Until our elected leaders find the courage to protect and support these children, we will be Left Behind in the USA. Join our efforts to end this injustice.
