A short demonstration of the power of the space simulation program, "Celestia" to depict space in 3D real time. Video shows scenes from a Celestia add-on from the movie "2001" a Space Odyssey". Add-on by Jean-Marie le Cosperec. Script demo by Frank Gregorio. You can obtain Celestia at http://gregs-educational.info. This add-on is available for free on the links page of that site.
This demo gives you a good idea of the high-resolution graphics and spacecraft modeling capability of Celestia, a free, open source space simulation program. It is a super program for use in classrooms, to get middle and high school students and freshman college kids studying Astronomy and Earth Science into space, flying their own hyperdrive spacecraft. In the video, you could have accelerated your ship and flown down the length of the Discovery, or followed the Pod as it launched into space.
