  • THIS IS A TREASURE! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THEIR AMAZING TECHNIQUE! THANKS FOR UPLOADING!

  • It's amazing how in 10 minutes they talked about pretty much everything. Support, placement of resonance, relaxation of the throat, etc. I liked the segment where they said that some teachers say that breathing will take care of itself "WHAT?!?!?" lmao. Joan is hilarious. Here you have two of the best singers, not of the century, but in history, talking about something important and neglected.

I think Christina actually attacks WITHOUT support

Trying to make a loud sound by literally barking/coughing the note instead of making a big sound through proper support and resonance.

  • @primohomme - Christina is a prime example of someone who supports than attacks the sound leading to a far too heavy shock of initial sound. She "pushes" the sound out rather than letting it "float" out of her body with support behind it. Streisand had and still has a nice, soft attack with well supported breath. Her first few notes of a phrase seem to swell out of her. A sudden attack is OK but only if its lighter and supported correctly. A technique lost on many singers.

  • @RocktheStageNYC

You are right, I think specially in pop/rock singing many singers attack by quite literally coughing or barking the notes, the first offender that comes to mind is Christina Aguilera, I dispise her.

When compared to other contemporary pop vocalists like Lara Fabian, Whitney Houston (in her prime), Mariah Carey (in her prime) and going a bit back to Barbra Streisand, few nowadays know how to sing technically well.

  • @primohomme - technique yes but "secret"? No. Marilyn Horne herself has said that 95% of the female singers at The Met do not know how to properly support their voices. Its almost a lost art in teaching nowadays. There is support and the attack. They work together but are two different parts of a whole process of the open throat technique. Attack is the initial burst of sound while support is what holds the sound a loft after its created. Most singers simply don't learn this.

  • @RocktheStageNYC

I think there certainly is a certain technique that must be learned, that most singers who are not trained do not really know how to get around to, so their voices give out quite easily. I find that a lot even amongst very talented natural singers, they run out of breathe or struggle with projecting using support instead of diaphragmatic attack.

  • @Oberon90 - there is no "secret" of breath support. Its a learned process and technique that can take months to a couple of years to do correctly. The breath cycle is a natural thing that many people get wrong because they over think the process and try to manipulate the process.

  • THIS IS A GOOD AS A BOOK, SUCH REFERENCE AND TECHNIQUE...GREAT. THANKS FOR UPLOADING THIS.

  • Can someone say when and where was this recorded? Thanks for the video! :D

  • great, great, great to hear this. Interesting too that Horne quotes Bergonzi and how he keeps his voice in shape in his 70's. If you haven't heard the 1970 recording of Norma from the MET with Joan, Marilyn and Carlo..that is a complete must. I heard Bergonzi do a Masterclass in his early 80's and when he demonstrated..it was still that virile, honey-like sound.

  • It's really a treasure for us singers! How to pay for it? lol I want to know Horne's secret for breath support too !
