We don't really know... That's why CERN made the Large Hadron Collider. To find just that. Energy forms mass. But what is the process that turns the energy into mass? Hopefully the LHC will find the Higgs boson, the last key to what E=MC2 means and how physical objects are created from nothing. The Higgs boson is the base in which certain forms of energy slow down to create mass of a physical object. The "Big Bang" it creates will let the scientists examine exactly how everything came to be.

Look into Nassim Haramein's Grand Unified Field Theory. It fixes most of modern physics quirks on infinite and finite systems.
