Deborah Kerr, Bill Holden, and Thelma Ritter in The Proud and Profane. She's an upper-class American war widow who's joined the Red Cross and he's a Lt. Col. with a big chip on his shoulder and a moustache. They have a stormy affair with bad results.
* A little trivia: Deborah Kerr and Thelma Ritter still hold the records for the most Oscar nominations without a win (They each had six. Deborah for Best Actress and Thelma for Best Supporting Actress)*

I served aboard the ship shown in this film, but not in WW2 of course. She was an active Attack Transport until 1968, then scrapped. She was the USS Rockbridge, APA 228. She had a battle star from the Battle of Okinawa. She was part of the task force in 1946 at an atomic bomb test. Even later crew had to take medical tests for radiation poisoning effects. She also served during the Cuban crises and carried marines to Guantanimo Bay. I was an assault boat coxswain while I was on her.
holjo57, there is a web site called iofer where I've been able to get DVD's of old movies from. Do a google search for ioffer, post an ad and you should get a reply. The DVD's aren't that cheap but these old movies aren't avaible to purchase. This movie is shown on Turner Classic Movie channel but they don't provde a DVD, lots of luck.
It is possible to get DVD's of these old movies. I advertised on the ioffer web site, do a google search and it should come up. There are people who can provide you with almost anything you are looking for.
