is this being felt by people in Detroit at all?

@GeARHeadranger88 It's going on to this very day. Last night, (January 30th, 2012), it was unbelieveably loud in the parking lot of the West-end Canadian Tire. Loud enough that people were congregating and listening and laughing that some people say it doesn't exist. A deep, cyclic, rumble that you both feel and hear. I am a resident of LaSalle, and later that evening (9:00 PM) it was just as loud in LaSalle. Extremely low-frequency, and cycling up/down.

...could be noises from underground installations, military, corporate or other. In the U.S., many below ground facilities and tunnels have been created in the last 20 years using technology that allows for complete secrecy.
Just to be clear. The very loud sounding crackling noise is my fingers running over the iphone mic. They're not heard by the meter and you will see it does not react to them. The steady drone and frequent train whistles are the real problem. The mic in the iphone is nowhere near as sensitive as the sound meter, so it's the numbers that are most disturbing.
