The dance is called Seann Triubhas("old trousers" in Gaelic.) After the battle of Culloden in 1746, where the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated by the English, the Scots were forbidden by the Disarming Act of 1746 to wear the kilt, play the bagpipes, do their dances, etc. However by the end of the century, all things Scottish had become a popular fad in London Society and the Act was repealed in 1782. The dance starts out in slow time showing the constriction on the dancer of wearing trousers. The music changes to quick time to tell of the shedding of the trousers to show the freedom and joy of dancing in the kilt.
This dance was performed at the Vandalia Gathering in Charleston, West Virginia.
