Candela

In composing music for solo piano in a popular style I took melodic material from an etude of Chopin and applied a different kind of rhythmic inflection . A new piece of music is formed in which the rhythm is driven by the superimposition of clave pulse yielding a Cuban piano style with syncopation in both hands. "Candela" is a vernacular expression for high-spirited activity throughout the night, something like "burning the candle down." It may as well be a generic word for a style of music as it has been applied as a title to many different works.
