This is a demo of the basic blues scale, also known as the pentatonic scale with the added "blues note" or "flatted 5th note". The point of the lesson is to move along the length of the fretboard rather than staying in the 5th fret box pattern. The advantage of moving along the length of the fretboard is that 1) it brings you to higher pitch notes (yes they are the same notes played over and over, but into the higher octaves) which allows for much more drama and allows you to build a solo to a climax rather than staying in one area and getting only a few octaves, 2) it brings your fretting hand into new positions on the neck that allows you to more freely explore other areas and come up with new ideas, 3) it can (though does not require) allow for slides from one position to the next which gives an effect that you don't get when staying in the 5th fret box area.
