The Michael Brownstein 99 Memorial Gap Year Fellowship Program (Brownstein Fellowship)
has been established to perpetuate the spirit and memory of Michael Brownstein, a young man with a strong humanitarian spirit and sense of social justice whose life was tragically cut short in a June 2007 accident, but not before he lived his life to the fullest, passionately pursuing life-affirming experiences through extensive travel.

The Brownstein Fellowship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior based upon a proposal for a gap year experience that incorporates both travel and service to others. Fellows will be selected from a a diverse applicant pool at Harvard-Westlake School.

The purpose of the Fellowship is to inspire greater cultural awareness, humanitarian assistance and self-reliance among high school students during a "gap year" of meaningful international travel.

The Brownstein Fellowship has established relationships with several international humanitarian service groups, including Cross Cultural Solutions, Globe Aware, Rustic Pathways and other programs. Brownstein Fellows are encouraged to participate in those programs and propose their own unique travel program and goals.
