Levine's interpretation is too melodic and not strong enough.
-
This is actually a pretty interesting interpretation. Levine does a good job bringing out the contrapuntalist in Wagner here, unlike most conductors, who use a Wagner overture as a chance to RAAAAAAGE.

This is the only composer I actually know that doesn't do movies

@eoghdes18 I take it all back! Levine is wonderful! I can HEAR the contrapuntal texture for goodness sake, and see him actively bringing it out!

I love James Levine...I have been to 100's of operas at the Met, and have seen the Ring, Die Meistersinger, tannhauser, and parsifal twice.. I think that Jimmy's / Otto Schenk's "Parsifal" is one of the best productions done.
That being said, the Met. Opera suffers from NY syndrome..it seems everyone in the chorus and orchestra is in competition with one another.
This can best be heard in Parsifal after "Mittag", zum letzten mal between Karajan's and Levine's..it is butchering of the score

The three themes are represented beautifully in the coda by the winds, horns and strings as in no other performance on YOU TUBE. Additionally, the wind sections before the coda have a wonderful dance-like character which I believe would bring a smile to the composer's face.

When I asked a friend of mine, a violinist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, what was it like to play under Solti, his answer was, "He's the best!" When Solti was asked why didn't he want to conduct the NY Philharmonic, instead he chose the CSO, Solti said the CSO "was the very best." I agree. Solti left this world too soon.

you are absolutely right about that

Hey everyone have you heard of Sir Georg Solti's version of all of the Wagner overtures, his renditions are incredible.
