Unedited recording of bike route from Lower Hutt to Wellington City, documenting what is currently the 'safest' route possible (i.e. using roads at 50kmh traffic and off the road where ever there is a dedicated cycleway.) It is currently impossible to avoid biking on SH2 with 100kmh traffic for a short stretch near Petone. Will be interesting to see how this improves in 5 years or so, as better cycleway surfaces, signage, and a wider and complete cycleway along SH2 would allow a much broader section of the Wellington region into commuting or recreationally traveling between the Hutt and Wellington CBD.

  • Yes you can go both ways. You can also go on the footpath or the hutt river trail between Petone and Lower Hutt. It isn't ideal to be going north on the last stretch of the motorway before arriving at Petone as there is 1km where you are on the road against the direction of the traffic, but I have done this from time to time.

  • what about cycling back from Wellington to Lower Hutt? Can you use the same cycle ways? Especially along the motorway, when the cycle lane finishes you'll be cycling into oncoming traffic going at 100kmph?

Thanks for making this video, it's great to know the safest ways into town and back :)

  • @2nguyen2 i'm moving to NZ next year, could u tell me more about driving in NZ ?

  • It's nice that they respect bicyclists there, here in Indonesia they usually honk at bikers

  • u live in a nice neighbourhood. How much is the cost of a house there ?

  • What i often saw on my holiday in NZ was that cyclists were cycling on the road, just at the inside of the white-line, while there was plenty of asphalt at the side of the road.

So cars had to make un-necessary manouveres to avoid them.

Makes me think Kiwi-cyclists, just like Kiwi-car-drivers, have tiny brains.
