Solidarity Movement for Aceh Punks

The 64 music lovers, some of whom had come from as far as Jakarta and West Java, were arrested by regular and Shariah police as they held a charity concert in Banda Aceh's Taman Budaya park on Saturday night.

The 64 punks, many of whom are from as far away as Bali or Jakarta, were picked up on Saturday night during a local [Charity] concert [for orphans].

Dozens of young men and women have been detained for being "punk" and disturbing the peace in Aceh, Indonesia's most devoutly Muslim province. They are being held in a remedial school, where they are undergoing "re-education".

Rights groups have expressed concern after photographs emerged of the young men having their mohawks and funky hairstyles shaved off by Aceh's police.

They look sullen and frightened as they are forced into a communal bath.

"What makes the police think that they have the right to arrest our friends for dressing in a certain way? They didn't break any law. From what I know, the police are the ones who infringe on human rights."

"People always perceive punks as a bunch of kids who act like thugs and are always drunk. But punk is a symbol of expression. We might dress in a certain way, but each individual has the freedom of expressing themselves."
